Convert laptop LCD to desktop?

I was tearing apart an old, dead laptop and the only things to rescue from the scrap heap was the hard drive and the LCD display itself.

I can get a 15-pin D-sub connector, but how hard do you think it would be to get proper power and data connections made? Anyone ever try this?

I believe each LCD has it's own controller, and basically you'd spend more money wiring up that display that to buy a new LCD.

i was sort of wondering this too. It'd be cool to have an ultra thin LCD montor for special uses that a desktop LCD would be rather thick for.

lol care to share what uses the desktop LCD would be thick for?

I wouldn't say necessarilly too thick but it's nice to have a small LCD to hook up to stuff temporarilly. I have a 12" LCD that I used to use when I needed to do stuff on some of my computers that I didn't have hooked up to monitors.

OP: it's possible but will most likely be too complicated and expensive, controller boards run around $250 from earthlcd.

Blecch. There goes my idea for turning this thing into a framed screen on the wall for changing pictures! 😛

Thanks for the dose of reality. 😉

the panels on laptops usually aren't that good anyways. But i'd say it is possible maybe just not worth it.

well, granted theres a few desktop LCDs that are pretty thin, but I was thinking of uses like mounting in a car, mounting on the inner side of a kitchen cabinet door, or hanging on a wall like a picture frame
