I have some ISO files from DVD's Ive ripped and Id like to use them on my media system. I have a Win7 media center PC with playon installed to share the files to other PC's and my xbox 360. Id love to be able to automount any of the iso files and play directly, but since I dont think I can do that, what is the best best file format to convert to and using what program to do it? (preferebaly freeware)

you might be able to remotely mount an image using daemon tools. .mkv would be a good format choice, but i don't know if the xbox will play it. there are plenty of good freeware choices for software. vlc will play .iso's perfectly, but again no good for the xbox.

What is the advantage of going mkv? also what is the best file format if I wanted to convert the isos to allow the XBOX to read them?

Im tempted to have two directories - one with the ISOs I rip and another with files converted to be used on the XBOX\WII\Ipod whatever...

You do not need to convert them. PS3 Media Server ftw (yeah it works with xbox). VLC will also play them as well as anything else.

MKV is a good container type because they support various video/audio codecs, as well as multiple audio tracks and subtitles. And it's open source.
