CONVERT function from FAT32 to NTFS for XP PRO....??

Hey there,

I need to know how stable the conversion is for the FAT32 to NTFS structure. I want to convert since I am now
doing digital video editing with my comp and the 4 GB file limit is UNBEARABLE. I can't afford to format and redo everything.
It's not time efficient with me right now. Is there any GREAT HARM in doing this.....IE: more BSODs or stability probs ???
Performance changes ???

Thanks for any input.

Well be sure to back up your data just incase, but otherwise it is fairly painless and NTFS is much better than FAT.

Another way to convert to NTFS is by using a program called PartitionMagic. I bought the program because it's very handy. Plus you don't loose the data if you want to resize the partitions or anything else.

The conversion goes just fine, I have yet to run into any issues.

CONVERT volume /FS:NTFS [/V] [/CvtArea:filename] [/NoSecurity] [/X]
volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon),
mount point, or volume name.
/FS:NTFS Specifies that the volume is to be converted to NTFS.
/V Specifies that Convert should be run in verbose mode.
/CvtArea:filename
Specifies a contiguous file in the root directory to be
the place holder for NTFS system files.
/NoSecurity Specifies the converted files and directories security
settings to be accessible by everyone.
/X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary.
All opened handles to the volume would then be invalid.

Hey there,

So far so good. I did the convert last night or should I say 4 AM CST this morning. I had to do the conversion since
I will be using my machine for editing like I said. The 4GB file limit was my only reason for the conversion. Let's
see if I can break that 4 GB limit now...........cross your fingers. 🙂

Thanks everyone. It's great to know there are always people willing to help out others 😉

Just a note, there is a FAQ on this in the FAQ section (linked at the top of every forum and in various sigs around the forum). Please look through them when you get a chance, you might learn something. I did 🙂
