i have win2k dual boot with win98. i installed win2k with FAT32 partitions but now would like to convert that to NTFS 5.0 so that i can make use of the security features in NTFS. i have pqmagic 5 which also supports win2k.

1. can i just convert the filesystm on my win2k (drive d) to NTFS and will it start working or will win2k have problems? (since pqmagic will convet the filesystem from dos mode where as win2k still doesn't know when i reboot, that contrary to what its settings say, the file system is now NTFS)

2. when i create a new profile in users and pwds applet in control pannel, it creates the user all right but doesn't create a folder for that user in the d:\doc and settings\<username>\... so that they end up using a temp profile folder when they login (this doesn't save any changes they make to their desktop appearence/start menu etc, once they log off). how do i ensure that when i create a new user, their own profile folder is created under the doc and settings folder?

Convert:

Converts FAT and FAT32 volumes to NTFS. You cannot convert the current drive. If convert cannot lock the drive it will offer to convert it the next time the computer restarts.

convert [drive:] /fs:ntfs [/v]

Parameters

drive:

Specifies the drive to convert to NTFS.

/fs:ntfs

Specifies that the volume be converted to NTFS.

/v

Specifies verbose mode. All messages will be displayed during conversion.

thanks eraser! i will try that out. however, it IS non-destructive conversion, correct?!

also, would i have problems accessing FAT32 files from other drives (such as e and f which for me are storage drives in FAT32)? finally, in case of an emergency if i need to use the recovery console, would it be able to read the file system from the win2k machine (since it will be working from DOS mode)?

I just MUST correct this:

Windows 2000 (NT5) NTFS ISN'T called NTFS V5.0 - It is NTFS V3.0 - There isn't NTFS V5.0!, the latest is V3.0.

Windows NT 4.0 uses NTFS V1.3.

Partition Magic 5 and a LOT other referance documents calls it NTFS 3.0 - look at Microsoft site, I remember seeing it someware....don't remember where....

TechMaster, I'm almost certain your correct on that. Win2k uses NTFS 3.0 and NT 4.0 uses NTFS 1.3 I believe. If you check the documentation for Win2k it will confirm that it uses NTFS 3.0.

As for the article at Ars Technica, I remember reading it over and noting one or two slight errors in it. An excellent article but not 100% correct in all cases.

The conversion is not a destructive one , and yes you will be able to read and write to FAT32 partitions.

For more info go to your desktop and press the F1 key to bring up Windows 2000 help. Select the index tab and type in the word convert in the space provided. Then read the info provided.

Well, watch out, cause I think Win98 cannot recognize NTFS. And if you have some apps installed, you have to maybe reinstall all, because, it can mess up the Drive Letter
