convert external CD-RW to HDD?

I picked up an HP 7200 2x2x4 external cd rom (good price). I opened it up and it was a regular IDE drive on the inside. Shouldn't be a problem to mount it internally. But can I stick an old hard drive in the external case and make myself a portable drive? The chip on the circuit board said shuttle ( I'm guessing that is the brand name of the chip) What would I do for drivers?

Thanks

What type of connection is it? If it is a regular IDE drive you shouldn't have any problems sticking a different one in there. HP should have drivers on their site for it.

Yes, you can install an IDE hard drive in the case. The Shuttle circuitry converts the USB interface to IDE, so you just need to use the same drivers that you would have installed if using the CD-RW. If memory serves, it will show up in Device Manager as "Shuttle USB to ATAPI bridge". Then just find a 5¼" plate to cover the opening on the case and you're set.

Best regards,
Floyd

Thanks for all the replies. It's Parrallel not USb, but that shouldn't matter much (except for slow transfer rates). I tried the drivers off the HP site but didn't have much luck. I'm going to try and re-apply the drivers and see if I can give it a go.

I have tried three rounds of drivers, some from the HP site, and some from the shuttle site (Shuttletech.com) and the ones from the original CD. Each time I get the infamous yellow exclamation point in win device manager. " device isn't working properly or not all the drivers are installed "

any suggestions?
