Convert back to Win98SE from XP

Why the hell would someone want to do that? I'm selling the computer and keeping my XP version, and want to reinstall the OEM 98SE that came with the system. What's the easiest way to do this? Nothing I need to save on the HD, but last time I did this it seemed 98SE didn't have a driver for my NIC card.

Where would I find that? The OEM resore disk lists a driver for a NIC card, but after installation it shows card not installed. Win 98SE does include a driver for a NIC card doesn't it?

Right click 'My Computer', Select 'Properties', switch to the 'Hardware tab', click 'Device Manager', and identify the NIC. Search for a Win98 driver.

Create a Windows 98 boot disk. (boot disks found here).

Boot your system with that disk in. fdisk to delete the partition. Create a new one. reboot and start Win98 setup.

When prompted, provide the Win98 NIC drivers.

If this is win98se you can run the update rollup found at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html after win98se is installed. This has several updates and drivers that might give you what you need. You will probably have to go to device manager and remove the NIC driver if an incorrect one was installed. It will then try to redetect upon reboot. If this doesn't help you, you should be no further behind, but it may give you working drivers.

If the NIC still does not work, use a utility (such as Sissoft Sandra or Belarc Advisor) to identify the NIC and locate drivers for it.
