convert avi to mpeg

Hi is there a program that will convert AVI (any format, divX, raw etc...) to MPG? I badly need to do this since I'm making a trailer of a movie for a project, and Adobe Premiere decided to be stuburn on not accept AVI files, I can play it, but if I put it in the time line it shows up as blank, and it does not do it to MPG.

Any programs that will do this conversion easly for me? Thanks.

I forgot to mention, it has to be free. I don't feel like going through the trouble of paying for something I'll probably use once for this project (due in a few days). Thanks

Thanks!

This apears to be a trial though... it says something like "limited 30 day trial can be used for more then 30 days" but what do they mean by that? Is it just like winzip where it shows a nag each time? As long as it will work well (and not put some kind of thing on the video or something) then it will do. I rather have something that I can always use for future projects as well since I'm sure I might need to do this again one day.

You can use it to convert avi to mpeg2 for 30 days. After that, you can no longer use the mpeg2 function without registering. However, you can still convert to mpeg1 with no time limitation without registering.

Oh I see, and MPEG1 is the standard right, as in normal video for a PC, while MPEG-2 is for dvd only? I have a pinnacle bungee and it produces MPEG, but I'm not sure if it's 1 or 2 though. I want to make it that format so it will work in Premiere.

Another thing, I aborted the convert to play what it has done so far to see if it works, and nothing shows up but black and no audio, is this normal, or should I still be able to see what it did so far? I don't want to wait an hour only to find out it did not work.

I can't seem to get any of these to work properly. But is there a way I can get Adobe Premiere to work properly with AVI? I can import it in the bin and play it from there to do the cutting etc... but when I put it in the time line, it does not want to play. 🙁 Is there some way I can make this work?

Turns out even Ulead can't display this either. Must be some kind of stupid non standard format of DivX. That's what I hate about video, there's too many formats of formats etc... and no one uses the same ones to encode. I think I'll just declare this project 0%. It just can't be done, unfortunatly. Thanks anyway for the help though.

I just thought of something... maybe this is codec related or something, is there a way I can just download a bunch of codecs in one pack or something? I have no clue what codecs I need for what etc but I was thinking that if I can download something that would install something to support a few thousand more formats maybe it would work. I do have the divX codec but I assume I must be missing a bunch of other ones that are making things screw up like this.

Yeah the problem most likely does have something to do with the codec for it. There are many codec packs out there, but usually they just dump a bunch together and can cause more problems than good, due to conflicts with the different codecs.

Yeah I got it to work! I did not think of this before. I played it full screen, hooked up the composites accordingly, and opened my capture software and captured it! Only problem I do loose a bit of quality since it will limit it to capture quality and not the actual movie's quality, and that movie is pretty high quality too, but at least I'll get capture quality which is still pretty good with my pinnacle bungee. (there's a review at my site if interested)
