If anything the US has been leaning and accelerating more towards the liberalization of its market structure since the mid 70?s than away from it. If we take a look at the political discourse over the last two decades, we can see a systematic dismantlement of socialist type market interference by the government exemplified by the deregulation of the airline industry in the late 70?s, to Reagan?s air traffic strike injunction in the 80?s, to the plethora of deregulation spurred by the passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, to the market based solutions to solve the issues of social security (privatization) and health insurance (Health Savings Accounts) proposed for the 21st century. If anything, convergence should be seen as a move by Japan, Germany and other nations towards more liberal market structures, with United States far ahead, blazing the trail for all.
