convenient way to send money to europe

i want to send money to a friend in berlin. aside from making him sign up for paypal, which is too much for and it'll take a chunk of comission, what are some other ways to send ? moneygram? westernunion? wire transfer?

The fee on Western Union for 1k USD is 20 dollars based on a 3rd party page cuz I can't even get WU's page loaded
