Convenient Forgetfulness

I have been doing alot of on the side AutoCad Landscaping work for my ex-bfs dad. He pays me $15 an hour, and I do whatever he asks for when it comes to the job he gave me.
Now all of a sudden, he swears up and down he has been paying me 12 an hour, not 15. And he has proof! *sarcasm*
He went back through all the sums of money he has paid me, divided them by twelve, and it all works out.

For example, the last check I received was for 3.5 hours, at 15 an hour. I was paid 52.50.
We he, in his great wisdom, decided I actually worked 4.375 hours, for 12 an hour. The only problem is, I either round up, or round down. More often I round down. I would never bill for that.
Same with all the other checks. Very odd hours I have been working. But he refuses to believe me, his son (my ex) or anyone else. I even have it written down. He has got it in his head I am trying to screw him out of money, and was getting mighty upset about it.

How do you deal with someone like this, other than not doing any work for them anymore?

UPDATE:

He found out he was wrong and sort of apologized. Not to me of course. But just in general.
He had written it down on every check he had ever written me the amount paid, the hours, and the hourly wage. Surprised he didn't accuse me of forging the checks.
What a dork.

you mean 4.375 right?

I don't get what the big deal is. Just charge him an extra hour for work!

Yes, sorry. 4.375.
The problem is, he paid me the 52.50 already.
I have done alot more work since then, and now it's pay time and he isn't wanting to pay the amount we agreed on. Enough so that extra 3 dollars an hour actually matters. And all of a sudden he decided to forget what he was paying me.

Is this all under the table or are you offically on his payroll? Like do you pay taxes for your work?

How many hours have you accumulated?

Then charge him an extra 2-3 hours on this next invoice (which you should be start sending him if you haven't been)

Is this a payroll check? It should have the hours and rate. If he's been writing you personal checks, you don't have much to go by apart from going up the line to local law enforcement or IRS or something.

Some people try to make a living by screwing others. Maybe he thinks you need the money so bad you'll put up with getting your pay cut by $3/hour. I believe he knows full well that he's cheating you and is yelling loudly to cover up the lack of evidence.

If I were you, I'd focus on the issue of how many hours you worked. If the guy insists that it's perfectly normal that you would have billed him for 4.375 hours or 8.1739 hours or whatever, when you AND HE know that's completely ridiculous, you will not win your argument. Take the $12 for what you've already done and quit working for him.

He has no choice but to juggle the hours in order to "prove" you only have been getting $12.

Is there no record - even email - of how many hours you worked?

You mean how do you make him honest? Can't be done. Is it really worth the hassle?
