My apartment, is completely wireless! (sustain the "woots" for later)

Unfortunately, I did not realize when the renter put in the wireless router (g 125), he decided to make the WHOLE building wireless. Including 3 other apartments (7 people total) and the downstairs pub. (yes, i live above a brewery, sustain the "woots")

Now, me and another roommate share apartment 1 with the owner's son (cool guy, but otherwise unsavvy with this kind of setup he's doing). The two of us decided our pings were much too high on FPS and MMO games. He's getting 8,000 ping in WoW and I'm getting 200+ in CoD and UT2k4. It's a cable modem, but split that many ways.. and wireless at that... our bandwidth slows to a crawl whenever someone on the network decides to download an MP3... or watch streaming video.. w/e.

We contemplated getting our own 3mbs cable line for just the two of us and split the $44 month cost. Seems fine... but here comes the hard part I need you guy's help on:

We pay $120+ for cable, premium channels and the internet, split three ways of course, for the charter TV/Internet package. I hate charter, btw. The owner's son is kinda pissed that we're thinking of getting our own private internet because then we won't be paying for the internet on his side. Even though split 8 ways, the slight rise in cable costs for the rest of the people would be only like $4. So I don't know what to do. When we signed the contract, the apartment wasn't wireless. everything had an ethernet going to it. And he didn't tell us one line was used for the entire apartment at the time of our lease. in the poetic words of my roommate "this is bullsh1t, why shouldn't we get another line?"

(now "woot")

If it's not on the contract and you don't care about your friendship (or think the guy is overreacting) then do what the fvck you want.

I would offer advice, the only problem is that it takes you 1000 words to get to the fvcking point.

I would defintely go for the private connection, because like you said, nothing in the contract discusses internet access, and i can only assume there is no time period on your current arrangement with the wireless payments.

I don't think it's your job to worry about the other people in your apt, I would just tell the manager you're not paying the wireless bill anymore, and I'm sure he'll handle the rest.

As far as your third roommate goes, have you considered offering him in on your cable deal, or are you purposely leaving him out?

he's the one who runs the apartment, for the most part. He's getting a degree in Business at the end of this year so he's runnign the apartments while his dad runs the brewery. He just doesn't want us to drop out of the package deal because then he'll have to pay more for the internet he has now. Then the two of us will have awesome internet with no lag, plus cable tv and premium channels, probally for only $10 more per month for each of us.

I just talked to him today and he thinks we're overreacting. He said last year it was fine "and it was even slower then". But I dunno, I'm getting sick of my $50 belkin wireless card (had to buy to get internet) saying "limited or no connectivity" and watching my transfer rate going from 28mbps (TOPS!) to 4... in ping terms, that's 85 to 430 as soon as someone in the building watching streaming video or downloads an MP3. But maybe it's just charter sucking balls again, with all the new customer additions as the freshmen moved in, maybe the line's just lagging for the first week.

I'll give it another week or so and figure out what i'm gonna do from there. thanks all who repsonded and polled.

(yes, i jabbered in this one too, sorry :p)
