Controlling WMP (or some othe rpogram) from another PC?

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the best forum, for this but I gotta start somewhere. 🙂

I used to have a computer that housed all my music and I used a program called Command Cubes. That program let me control that server from any PC I had installed the software on and control what songs were playing and run it like a jukebox, pick genres, etc. Well, that PC died a while back.

I now have a Win7 PC in the basement that houses all my videos and music. I'll call this my "server".

I'm looking for a way I can play music from the server and control it from other PCs or devices. Currently it has WMP(12?) on it since that's what comes with Windows 7. I could use that to play the music just fine. If I do, I then need a way to control what's playing from my other PCs.

Is there a way to control WMP on one machine from another? If so, that'd probably be the easiest solution. Is there a way to control WMP from an Android phone? That'd make it even better.

Otherwise, is there better software that does allow itself to be controlled remotely that I should use instead of WMP? I'm up for installing whatever would make it work best. I don't want to stream the music from the server to the PC, I just want to use the PC to control what the server is playing and I'll be running audio cables from the server up to my stereo to play out the normal speakers.

Any software recommendations or links to tutorials or anything of the sort would be great. Controlling the server from my PCs is a must. Being able to control the server via an Android app would just be that much sweeter if it's even possible.

Thanks!

I know XBMC has a remote control feature via an android phone...not sure if thats quite what you're looking for.

What are you looking to play your music on? Obviously speakers, but what are they connected to?

I guess my question is, are you looking to use the media on your PC's, but store them on your server...or have the server do the "playing" as well as the storing, and have it play on something connected to the server?

I want the server computer to play the music. I just run audio cables from that server to my stereo upstairs to play the songs our my normal speakers. I just need a way to control what the server is playing from my laptop or phone or whatever.

I need to be able to play randmly by genre or create a queue list of songs to play next or whatever might come up. Kind of like a Jukebox where I can add songs but then also with a random feature to just say "Play all my rock songs" or whatever.

Share the music folder on your basement "server" computer. From another computer, run your media player and tell it that the music source is the "server" PC.

I don't want to play the music on the remote computers. I want to play the music from the server computer since that's hooked up to the stereo. I just want a way to control what the server computer is playing from the remote computers.

I'd take a look at installing XBMC on your server and control it using your android device, imo.

Theres also always remote desktop, if you want to do that 😛

How about using iTunes to play your music and an iPod Touch or iPhone to control it? You can do the same with a Sonos setup. Or a WD Live device.

I don't have any "i" devices. The phone part I don't really care about as much. Mainly just a way to control a music player on one PC from another PC.

I know there are plenty of "Remote Desktop" type programs like LogMeIn, VNC, etc. The point is I don't want to actually remote into the other PC to control it. I'm looking for software that will let me control the software via other software on another PC.

Just like a server / viewer relationship.

I don't know it this would help to what you would want to, but...

I've YAMAHA 5.1 Receiver RX-V467 that's hooked to Argosy HV335T Mobile Video HDD Media Player. Not just for video, but all files can be played thru that.

Now, into Argosy Media Player I can stick USB wireless adapter and play(I've tried with videos only) videos on my TV- it's hooked to received, I can play videos from my PC thru Argosy & Yamaha on my TV. Of course, it can be done with audio - I haven't tried that yet.
I do know, that HD - .mkv, .h264 videos plays very well thru Argosy on my TV. Dunno, about audio - I wouldn't play mp3, but haven't checked yet, if .ape, .flac would play thru Argosy MP. Now, with wireless adapter stick in Argosy MD, I could map network drives and if I would like to, I could transfer wireless files from my PC to Argosy Media Player HDD(right now, I've 640G HDD installed in Argosy box).
If I wanted to play video files with audio setup made in Yamaha, I could use just Argosy remore. If I wanted to change audio setup, I would have to use Yamaha remote. Since, I have setup 5.1 just TV, Argosy video and DVD player.
Yamaha has also hooked Thorens TT and Technics Tape Deck, which Yamaha plays ONLY 2CH Stereo thru Polk Audio Monitor50 Series II Floorstanding Loudspeakers.

I don't have a sub, since Polk Audio Monitor50 Series II Floorstanding Loudspeakers serves a a sub - Yamaha have in setup feature: "No sub, Large Front speakers".

The XBMC android app is excellent! I have a netbook sitting in a closet with the receiver that runs house and outdoor speakers, running xbmc to run play music hosted on my server.

XBMC can also serve up a web control page that can give you library information.

I also used playerpal in the past but it's no longer developed and isn't free, but it serves up a webpage that can use different skins on a device by device basis.
