We have several network printers that we need to control over TCP/IP. They're brother 2700 color laser printers. We bought Alagus print server, but we can't make it do anything it advertised.

We need the ability to log and give out a print quota to students. Say, 500 sheets per semester. We also need to restrict print jobs, such as nothing larger than 30 pages at a time. No color without permission, etc.

What we'd like to do is keep the printer as a network share which can be accessed from dorm rooms. (This is a hall printer for dorms) We do have a PC to connect it to directly if needs be. (The printer has USB, TCP, and Parallel) We were looking at installing SuSE 10 on the computer and controlling it that way, but we already have a Windows Domain setup that we can use.

What are the best ways to control network printers that would fit our needs? I'd like to be able to create custom rules while logging and restricting rules for network users. (In a Windows environment preferably, but we can work with Linux if it's accessible from the Windows machines)
