are there any controllers i can use for my mp3's? i dont really want to buy an audigy/audigy 2 platinum and the creative remote that i have is of poor build quality

Yup, it has winamp plugins with the latest releases. Could probably use the ATI file player and the library application also.

Checkout WinLIRC and build your own.

There's also a WinAmp Plugin that allows you to use a Gravis (or similar) GamePad as a wired remote (good for use in one room).

keyspan digital media remote. very simple. should be 15 or so used... don't buy it new tho, i think they still want 40+ for it 🙁
