Hello all. I have a Linux system that I just installed (Ubuntu), and my primary machine which is a Windows XP system. I don't have a KVM right now. Is there ANY way to control my Linux system through any freeware/OSS software like UltraVNC or using SSH or something? I did google, but not really sure.

If you could just list any of the programs that will accomplish this, I'd appreciate it. They are all on the same router, and I'd like something similar to Remote Desktop if it's out there, where I could control the system fully including GUI.

Does something exist like this? Thanx.

Resolution:
I'll have to check that out. But for now, I got everything working. Just downloaded TightVNC for Windows on my XP box. Installed it, and use the Viewer. On the Linux box, I just enabled it by going to System -- Preferences -- Remote Desktop, and enabled it.

I'm actually writing this on the Linux box through VNC. But it's a little laggy. This was nice to get set up, I'll have to see what other programs there are that I could use that might be faster.

(Like said above, maybe FreeNX.)

Thanx for the help everyone.

VNC would work

I would tell you to use Putty and ssh in. You don't get GUI, but that's ok. Then you can just init 3 and have a faster box.

So, would TightVNC be ok? I'm really not sure as to which clients have both a Linux/Windows client, and if I can just use the same app to do both the server and client issue.

Links to what I need would be most appreciated.

(Still reading the Ubuntu Forums.)

cached link. Think it goes over what you are looking for. You should be able to install vnc on a windows or linux host and be presented with the same sort of desktop view.
