Perhaps, but when they're tied to "earning" their government benefits they have little incentive (to say nothing about time) to find private-sector employment. I realize it's better than getting nothing at all out of them, but it's time to stop accepting half-measures. We simply cannot afford it anymore.

No argument from me on that. I'm just not sure that there's a truly good solution for it yet.

I don't have all the answers, but what you're proposing is an increasing public sector employment paradigm... and that's not sustainable.

Adult males in the USA don't get welfare (general assistance) and haven't done so in decades-at least since the Clinton welfare reforms, probably earlier.

And it's nonsense that there is no longer any stigma associated with welfare. Perhaps with some people there is no stigma, but I know tons of people (including inner city blacks) that are shamed by the mere thought of taking assistance and don't take what they could get. Don't believe me-go volunteer in a food panty or soup kitchen for a while.

Back on topic, I think you have to do a lot more than your 9-5 job to be considered giving back to the community (with rare exceptions, like the President with all consuming jobs). Everyone can and should do something to contribute to society, and I strongly suggest getting out of your comfort zone and doing something you wouldn't ordinarily do. And I think this obligation has nothing to do with politics but everything to do with your humanity. Make a difference to the world instead of merely being a sponge / consumer.

I think what is more important is that goverment gives a little over a third of your taxes to people that actually needs it and then wastes the rest on overpaid social workers and administrative costs due to over regulation. We have a welfare program in my church and it works like this:

On the first Sunday of the month we have a fast where we skip one or two meals and pray. Then we are expected to take the cost of a meal and donate it to the church Welfare program. Some give more and some give less. The church then allows the bishop to give people free food and pay for things like fixing a car, medicine, or rent. The Bishop is not paid and he has to have receipts for all of these funds. Also the checks must be signed by two people. Everything must be witnessed and documented and there are audits every 6 months.

Besides this members are expected to Tithe 10% of their increase to the church.

We can do more good with less costs because there are no middlemen or extreneous regulations to steal the money. No one gets paid in the middle.

This is the Mormon way of doing things and this is a world wide program.

The Mormon Church does not always say what they do with every dime of our donations. However, my wife did some volunteer work at the Red Cross, and she noticed that there is another charity called Christian Charities and the Mormon Church typically donates money to this fund. So the Mormons are also funneling money to non-members.

You can donate to other groups such as the United Way where you work. The united way is mostly regional organizations and they split up the donations to different groups with needs from homes for unwed mothers to the local Boy Scouts.

That is the kind of career welfare people this thread is about. They have more children then they can afford, then hold their hand out for social assistance.

Why aren't people like that viewed in the same light as criminals?

They are a drain on the system, and they are teaching their children how to be a drain on the system.

By donating money to a soup kitchen you help feed the homeless. Just as the people who donated the food also help.

I believe I stated as much? He and I are really good friends, we talk pretty much every day and have known each other for well over a decade. We met online when he was 13 and I was 14.

EB Games / Gamestop doesn't pay enough for what he thinks he is worth. Plus that kind of work is "below" him. He told me he's now applying for more student loans, though he has no clue what he wants to go and take.

They ARE criminals, people who commit fraud are jailed. What you cannot accept is that the people who defraud welfare are

A. Dumb criminals, since welfare gives you almost nothing.

B. A very small amount of actual recipients. (Less then 1% fraud in real life)

Lets flip that around. How can a community exist if 1/3 - 1/2 of the population were in jail? If 1/2 the population was affected by anything, the government would be asking questions.

If 1/2 the population had the flu, had chicken pox,,,, the CDC would be all over that place.

If 1/2 the population was making moonshine, the government would move in and shut them down.

If 1/2 the population had a waterborne infection, the CDC would be there.

But when 1/2 the population receives some kind of assistance, the government keeps their mouth shut.

I always thought it would be fun to also include a provision so that Right Wing Christians and Feminists could "adopt a child" like they do for African babies and pay for the cost of raising the child instead of the taxpayer. Couple of points:

1. Not all the money goes to charity
2. There are thousands of charities in the US, thats a lot of overhead.
3. Charity donations are tax deductible, so I subsidize your donations indirectly
4. Government is accountable to voters and its own laws
