Contract vs no Contract

Is it worth signing up for 2 years to get a cheap phone at a wireless provider or paying retail for the phone and not having to deal with the contract? I think it's 170 or so to break the contract.
 
I've seen contracts for as long as 3 years. 2 years, I wouldn't do it. Hell, I hate the 1 year contract as it is.
