Continuous Beeping With Ram Installed in Certain Slots

Hi all

Recently got all my components together in the build and I ran into a problem on boot. When there is any memory installed in the first two slots on the left (DDR3_4 & DDR3_2), the speaker frantically beeps and restarts after several seconds. However if I install any memory on the right side (DDR3_3 & DDR3_1) the computer gets to the boot screen and everything goes as normal. I haven't fiddled with anything nor installed anything and I'm simply starting up with nothing but the mobo, memory, and onboard graphics, but I can almost certainly assume this is a fault with the motherboard, correct? Just making sure, wanted some insight before I RMA the mobo. Never had to return a Gigabyte product, or anything for that matter :\

Here are the specs:

i5 4670k
Team Vulcan 8GB
GIGABYTE GA-Z87-D3HP
Corsair HX750

Thanks and let me know what you guys think

Take a look at the manual for the supported memory configurations. It's page 16.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4519#manual
So I've confirmed that regardless of which stick is installed, if it's in the first two left slots whatsoever it will start beeping and will not boot. However, if one or both of the sticks are installed on the 2 right hand slots it will boot no problem. It will also register all 8gb of memory if done this way (is there a performance hit in doing this?). I will most likely RMA the mobo but I'm curious, would I see any sort of downside to simply installing the memory on the 2 slots on the right and running it like that, assuming I have no need for more memory in the future?

Gigabyte boards tend to do this, they skip the slots nearest the cpu, otherwise they refuse to post, your manual should show the order they want them installed. I'm under the assumption from what you posted that this is just normal gigabyte. You even say in your post that 1-3 work which would be the first set of slots for dual channel and 2-4 do not, this would be the second set for dual channel.

Really? My last two Gigabyte boards (Core 2 Duo / i5 Lynnfield) had the ram installed in DDR3_2 / DDR3_1 or DDR3_4 / DDR3_3 slots, assuming you had two sticks, meaning the sticks should correspond to the color of the ram slot. So what you're saying is that having the ram installed in the two slots farthest away from the CPU is correct? The manual states that it should be installed by how it's color coded (just like the other mobos I mentioned earlier). Am I just misinterpreting this?

Sorry if I'm being confusing. I can post pictures if it's hard to visualise what I'm saying haha

According to page 16 of the user manual, the optimum configuration for a single dual channel setup with two memory modules is to put them in the 3_1 and 3_2 slots (i.e. the two light colored slots).

Correct, but it will only post if I install them in the 3_1 and 3_3 slots. If I install any ram in the 3_4 or 3_2 slots the computer starts frantically beeping and loops itself into restarts.

Sorry, I forgot to hit submit on an edit.

I'd RMA the board based upon your description of what is happening. The only other thing I think you could check is to see if a BIOS update is available that might improve memory compatibility.

Yea, updated the BIOS and that changed nothing. Contacted Gigabyte about it and will most likely RMA the board.

Do you have another two sticks of ram to fully populate and see if it still freaks out?
Have 4 sticks of DDR3 RAM from another system. I'll try those and post results.
