my mb beeps every second or so to no end when i try to boot... nothing ever shows on the screen.

here's some background... yesterday i came home to find that the red light on my optical mouse was not on... so i unplugged it from the usb port and immediately i heard a fan or something turn on really loudly. this went on for 5 minutes or so.... anyways i plugged the mouse back in and nothing happened, except that the red light would turn on for a split second and then die. so i rebooted... and things worked fine. so i left it for a while and when i came back it was back to the state i had found it (dead red light) but this time i could not reboot it.. this is when it started with the repeated beeping.

what do you guys think? power supply issue maybe?

the mb is an asus a7m266... i would look at the manual to see what the beeps mean, but the asus.tw site seems to be down...

thanks!

reset your bios and start stripping the system down. Get it down to the power supply, motherboard, ram, videocard. All else gets removed. After that, try swapping components.

Could be the USB somethings wrong. I once hooked up the USB wrong to the front of the case. Got a constant beep beep beep...... Undid the USB plugs and it didn't beep. Then got it hooked up right and no beeps. So maybe try going in the bios and disable USB. Then just boot up and see if it stops beeping.

usually long single beep at startup will indicate a memory problem. but then again if its the 'memory'' the problem could lie in the motherboard, but first I would start chekcing/replacing memory see if that helps.

last but not least, it could be a video problem but most likely the above is the way to start.
