Personally, I don't understand all the negativity about commute times in excess of 40 minutes. Perhaps, it's because I've just gotten used to it having commuted into NYC from NJ since the 1990's but I've always considered that time to be free time during which I can read, listen to music/podcasts/npr, watch movies or sleep.

yeah, I think mass transit commutes are vastly different than the driving commutes most of ATOT is probably more familiar with.

I don't mind an hour on the train if I'm sitting in a half-comfortable seat with an XL cup of coffee and a 4G tablet... make me drive and sit in traffic for an hour each direction, though, and I'd be ridiculously stressed out.

Seems like it would be worth the hassle for a while to get it on the resume. Doesn't have to be forever.

i commuted via train for 2+ years, about 40 minutes each way, and i agree with you. it's definitely not as bad as driving 40 minutes in traffic too. i would catch up on all of my tv shows during the train rides or watch movies, things i would do at home and use time at home to do anyways.

but even that is about the length i would want to do it at. there were days i hated it and just wanted to get home asap lol.

It's not the hassle - it's two or three hours eaten out of your life five days a week. Fuck that.

Getting a promotion is really valuable. I would take that but only if you can move closer.

The commute says "no way!" to me. I have a longish commute and its by far the worst thing in my day.

NYC, then find another place that has an easier commute. Use the extra $30k for the increased housing cost. If you can find a place that's closer to 40 minutes, then your commute will be better than it is now, and you'll have that sexy promotion instead of the shitty lateral move.

About this, thought this only really applies for 30+min commutes. I recently went from 30-35 mins commute via subway to 15min via car, the latter is far superior. For longer commutes it's no contest - sitting on a tablet and reading news while waking up to coffee = win.

No way in hell unless you can move closer and keep your overall expenses very similar to how they are now. The time lost, hassle and added expenses to commute make the bit of extra pay not really worthwhile. Even if it's the type of job you want. There must be some PM jobs within a more reasonable commuting range of you. If not maybe you ought to reevaluate your options for housing?

Personally, I wouldn't go for that, even if it was a bigger raise. It's a pretty big sacrifice to make if you consider everything, I think. How long would you have to do this commute until the possibility of not having to do that anymore...? If there would be possibility of relocating closer to home, or working from home, etc, then maybe worth consideration. If not... well, definitely wouldn't be for me.

well yeah... a 15 minute mass transit commute doesn't really exist. at least half that time would just be spent waiting for the train to arrive.

The commute alone to NYC is despicable.

It is obvious as hell that what you should do is keep he nj job until you can find a better one in nj. This NYC job isn't the only pm job in the east coast.

Except Hoboken to WTC via PATH. Those were the days.

still, you gotta figure by the time you walk to the train station, go through the turnstile, wait for the train, and then take that 2-mile long elevator up from WTC to the street-level (or navigate the concourse pre-9/11), that's a good 15 minutes right there even outside of the train ride itself.

Yeah, I was embellishing. But, we did have a shuttle from the apartment to the PATH and my building was a block away from the WTC. Door to door was probably 30 minutes.

Fuck that commute. I have a 5 minute, 3 mile commute. I go home for lunch, or whenever I need to, and it's glorious. It was annoying to previously have a 30 min commute.

I'd just stay put and then try to find a job you want in NJ.

Had a similar issue a couple of years ago but the commute difference was less. I said no and two months later found a job that was a 10 minute bike commute away and for even more money.

1. Take the job.
2. Commute to work.
3. Invest / save the extra money earned.
4. Retire early.
5. No more commute to anywhere.
