continuation of Dell $750 off $1500 laptop deal *discussion*

Ok, not a hot deal, but a discussion about quite possible the hottest deal of the year. I've been slacking since I got my 8600; just fired it up today. Interestingly enough, it came with a 1.6Ghz Pentium-M and not the 1.5Ghz I ordered! Free CPU upgrade woo! Anyone else have a similar experience? Get hardware you didn't order?

Also, anyone know if there was an MIR for the 4 year extended warranty? I know there was a discount, but I'm not sure if it was MIR or not. The only MIR that's listed on the packing slip is the $49 shipping.

i love how you start your thread with "ok, not a hot deal"

what's there to discuss that hasn't been said in the original thread?

Im not so happy with my purchase. I got the Inspiron 8600. It only has two USB ports and no serial port or parallel port (kinda weak for a desktop replacement). No track stick like it shown on the AnandTech Review and the touchpad is not very sensitive 🙁

Hrmm, well ive replaced the HD on my 600m, dam hitachi was doing the clicky shiet (known issue for the pass 3 years) . Now my other gripe is the dam dvdrom is so noisy when reading.

i had that issue with my DVD/CDR drive with my 600m. It wasn't playing some of my backups either. I called in to get a new one.

They changed manufacturers for the new drives I think, because this one is totally quiet, very nice and plays almost everything.

Tommy know if they sent you drive that was tagged refurb? Think i better call in and get it swapped, it spins so loud and fast that the drive door rattles.

I got exactly what I ordered, but it did come in 2 weeks ahead of schedule (even after I changed my order).

I got a 600m that came exactly as ordered. I did get it about ten days earlier than their page originally projected, and have been very pleased with it. The only downside was that, at the time I ordered, I couldn't find the 64MB video option, so I only got 32. It still runs CS:S reasonably well, though, and older games.

I got my 700m exactly as I ordered it, wiped and reinstalled XP Pro. Runs like a champ, better build quality than expected from previous experience with Inspirons. Screen is gorgeous. Only complaint is that DVD+RW doesn't like some 8x memorex DVD+Rs I have (even after flashing the 6100 to 6500). Rebate is processing, Fatcash is processing, everything about the purchase seems to have gone smoothly. Couldn't be happier.

Oh and wrong forum. 😛

I got an 8600 when they first came out. Mine has both a serial port and parallel port. It's been an excellent machine, but I sure miss the keyboard quality I had on my Thinkpad.

Yeah, what's the deal with that. I hate touch pads, and I bought it because Anandtech's review showed
the stick pointer. If they're changing all that stuff, they should've called it the 8610 or something different.

Neither was the touchpad on my 700m. But you can go to the settings for the touchpad (either in the tray or in the control panel) and increase the sensitivity and decrease the accidental palm-brushing protection. I did that and now it is great.

Definitely a great deal! I love it!

I got the 8600 with the 1.6Ghz "undocumented" upgrade. It appears they just ran out of the 1.5's and substituted the 1.6's. Other than that eveything else was just as ordered. Didn't get past the Dell startup (whacked XP Home and loaded Pro) but it works like a champ. Have a friend with one of the original 8600's with a P4 instead of the Centrino and he only gets a little over 2 hrs. battery time but this one gets almost 4 hrs. using the dynamic CPU switching mode. The lack of legacy ports is kinda of a pain but the unit is a little lighter as a result.

i ordered for $781 (minus a $50 shipping rebate that hasn't arrived). sold locally for $1100 two days after it arrived.

best deal i've had yet.

I have a 8500 and it had a noisy DVD/CDROM drive. A Dell alert (i hate those things) came up about it and provided a firmware update addressing the issue, worked fine. Anyone know if there is anything like this for the new laptops?

i am getting a replacement. the first one made this high winding noise when it was on. also, the volume button came off. it feels like a POS quality computer. not very happy.
