Continental Airlines Travelers - Elite Status Question

I'm about to book a trip that will push me into elite status between the roundtrip flight.

Any idea if I'll get the benefits on the way back, if they exist? It's a transcontinental flight and the thought of somehow getting a free upgrade out of economy for it sounds amazing. I wouldn't have the card on me, but I would be over the required amount of miles.

Call Continental and ask. I've been elite on US Airways, and it says it on your boarding pass, so you really don't need the card.

I'm very close to hitting elite on Airtran. I might take a pointless round trip to get it, hoping that Southwest will merge A+ Elite as A-List when they combine their programs.

sjwaste: I'm in the same boat. I'm 1 round trip away from doing it. If you go for Elite, I'll do it too! I as well hope they merge in as A-list!

I'm pretty lucky with AirTran (sort of). They are the only reasonably priced carrier to/from Portland, ME from the DC area. US goes as low as $210 RT to DCA, but they jack up the fares 4 weeks out regardless of how full the flight actually is. AirTran actually fills its buckets before raising prices, as far as I can tell.

I'm moving to Maine at the end of the week and it's hard to anticipate when I have to come back to VA, since we're still getting our house ready to go on the market. AirTran is saving my ass.

I need two more RTs in the next 60 or so days, and one of them is already known. I'm counting on the fact that I'll have to go back once more than expected.

Yeah, airtran has saved my ass, too. They are really cheap. It'll be interested to see if Southwest adopts their fare model. I hope so.
