Contested Hearing by mail?

Can't find my old thread, but a month and a half ago I had a ticket.
It was "Improper lane use". The cop said I was switching lane left and right, but I did not speed.
I went ahead and applied for contested hearing, got back the letter saying I can contest by mail.
Is it a "must lose" if I contest by mail?
I don't want to miss school to go to court but at the same time I want to fight this citation.
