Formatted a floppy, then created system disk. These are the files that were copied to the floppy:

aspi2dos.sys
aspi4dos.sys
aspi8dos.sys
aspi8u2.sys
aspicd.sys
autoexec.bat
btcdrom.sys
btdosm.sys
command.com
config.sys
drvspace.sys
ebd.cab
ebd.sys
extract.exe
findramd.exe
flashpt.sys
himem.sys
io.sys
msdos.sys
oakcdrom.sys
ramdrive.sys
readme.txt
setramd.bat

I can't need all these files just to flash the bios ? And I don't even have the flash utility or the bin file on here yet... Can you tell I've never done this before...( duh ) help please... thanks

Try making a clean bootable floppy by right clicking your mouse while pointing to the floppy (with a new media installed - old will work too since you will be formatting the floppy). Select format for the floppy drive and select "install operating system" with the format command. this will install the basic boot partition, command.com and only the needed system files to the floppy. This is the preferred floppy to use when upgrading your bios from floppy.

It's best NOT to use a Windows Start-up disk.

from a dos-prompt you can type this:

format a: /s

and this will make the floppy bootable. Then just copy the bios files.

That is true as well - format a: /s formats and installs dos to the a: drive from a dos prompt

And I overlooked entering that you get to the format in windows through the floppy icon in "my computer"

thanks for replies... new floppy has:

bh6ss.exe
flash50.exe
command.com
msdos.sys
io.sys
drvspace.bin

Don't think I want "drvspace.bin" on there, do I ??

Or, if you already have a formatted diskette, you can type "SYS C: A:" and press "ENTER". No, you don't need "DRVSPACE.BIN"

So, those files on my floppy, minus drvspace.bin, look good for the flash of later today (fear and trembling...) ?

( I have backup new rom bios chip with latest " SS " bios on it, from Jack at "badflash.org", in case I fubar the whole thing...) If this happens, then do I power down, pop out old bios, put in new one, and re-boot ?

Just as a little side note.........

You don't have to put the bios flash stuff on the boot floppy.

Once you start the computer with the boot floppy, you can pull it out of the drive, and stick another floppy in there......or several different ones for that matter.

Thanks for your help guys over the last few weeks with all my questions about this process...the flash of the BH-6 actually went smoothly:

Had floppy with Abit "SS" bios bin file, Award flash utility, command.com, msdos.sys, and io.sys. Booted to A:/typed "awdflash bh6_ss.bin", and away she went. (first time, would not run with the 50flash utility I had originally)...no smoke pouring from box...re-booted, saw "SS" bios, reset defaults; in box removed P2-400 slot 1 cpu,put in Celeron 600/Abit slotket/Alpha PEP66 HSF, in bios/chipset setup disabled "video bios cacheable", set "speed error halt" to "no", re-booted...and saw the beautiful site "Celeron at 901mhz" :) The Alpha HSF not loud at all- does not sound any louder than before !

Question... why did I need to disable "video bios cacheable" ? (several sites suggested doing that) thanks again...
