Contemplating upgrading the core of my comp

Well, I'm going off the college and I'm taking my desktop, for many reasons so please don't tell me i need a laptop. But I am considering upgrading the core of my rig. Anyway, i would be upgrading for increases processing power. My current rig is in my sig, and heres what I'm thinking about doing. Replace my cpu/mobo/ram. I'm thinking ill get a ASUS board(~$180) with the new chipset and then some ram(~$130), my friend already picked them out for me. Then for CPU i was thinking maybe get a Quad once they come out in 4 days, or get a e4300 for really cheap then once the quads are much cheaper grab on at that time. That would be the plan.

What would you do? Is it even worth spending the $350-475 for this upgrade or i should i just wait another year down the road and completely redo everything? I know some of you are going to suggest a new video card but for the games i play my 6800gt handles everything just fine. Thanks for any input and I'm very open to suggestions.

Honestly, if you need an upgrade at all, it's going to be a video card. Since you said it handles everything, then you probably don't need to upgrade for at least a year or two. Since you already have 2gb RAM, I would suggest just keeping what you've got for at least half a year. The better thing to do would probably be to wait until Penryn comes out and then you can make a better decision. While the Q6600s on July 22nd do seem very tempting, it will be very hard to get a G0 stepping for quite a while (some say mid-September before they are easily available).

Penryn is supposed to come out Q4 of this year, and Intel released some of the prices for the Xeon quads. They look yummy.

Now that is the kind of answer i really appreciate. Thank you. I guess I will wait till i get to school then re-evaluate and see if more power is necessary. I think that is my best route? Anyone else have an opinion?
