I need some help deciding if I should upgrade, which path to take, or just stick with what I got. Currently I have an 1100T x6 processor running at stock speed, but the NB has been overclocked to 3ghz. I have DDR3 1600mhz running fairly tight ram settings.

I am an occasional gamer, titles I've played in the past are The Elder Scrolls Line, Fallout Line, STALKER Line, Metro 2033, Serious Sam 3 etc....no MMORPG titles for me. Right now Im sitting on an overclocked 570 GTX and have been waiting for the right upgrade.

I do occasionally do some video encoding.

As of late, I have been doing a lot of encrypting my personal files, storage etc.

Option one

My first thought would be to simply buy an FX8350 and drop it in. That would enable me to keep the existing motherboard, cooler, etc. These processors supposedly have good multi-thread performance and support AES. Downside from I gather is single thread performance is sub par to the older 1100T.

Option two

Make the jump to an i5 processor and motherboard. Would gain significant performance all the way around. Multi-thread increase, single thread increase, AES Support, encoding performance gain etc. Downside...much more costly to implement for me. I'm not against this idea by any means...but I want the cost to performance ratio to be worth it and justifiable. This option is a guaranteed upgrade...but with a higher price tag attached to it and maybe overkill?

Option three

Do nothing. The machine does everything I ask of it now. I feel like a casual user these days, but I do get impatient while encoding video or encrypting large files/drives.

I know at one point, some hard drives came with a chip to increase AES performance...I'm not sure if these exist anymore and the cost of getting a 1.5-2TB drive this way may cost more than the option one and only gives me one benefit.

Well...thoughts anyone?

Don't believe the FUD. The 8350 is significantly faster than the older 1100T. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/697?vs=203 But whether its worthwhile depends on what used price you can get for your 1100T.

I would say go for option 1 or 3... probably 3. You're sat on a nice processor, and I doubt the next gen consoles will push CPU demands much. Give it a few more years, see how you get on. You can always upgrade to a Skylake or Excavator CPU further down the line.
