There are definately arguments for and against... much of it depending on the particular context. With that in mind, what do we think about the current policy of "containment" in regards to isolating the arrogant elites (extreme leftist Libs) to the big cities?
They own the big cities but that does not give them the political power they crave. Political sage Michael Brone observes, "the major metro areas are casting a declining share of the nation's votes." Fast growing communities in the suburbs with their McMansions and malls are heavily Republican. Has the threat from the elites been effectively contained?
This latest election seems to indicate perhaps a long-term trend. The 'Burbs are exploding with growth as people move there to escape high taxes, high crime, bad schools, and high house prices. In the Metro-Phoenix area where I live, towns like Mesa (a suburb of Phoenix) have tripled in population over the last decade... Mesa now has over 400,000 residents, more than Minneapolis, St, Louis, or Cincinnati.
There is no way the arrogant elites can keep up with this shift. Increasingly, people are escaping those high density areas where the elites are concentrated. The most amazing -and ironic- thing about this scenerio is the fact that the containment is virtually self-imposed! Through years of anti-American rhetoric and lambasting millions of decent Americans and their values, the arrogant elites have persuasively alienated huge numbers and have in effect rendered themelves impotent.
This introduces a new breed of containment- a "reverse containment" if you will. Is this a good thing? Should anything be done about it? What might the consequences be for this peculiar situation? Only time will tel... so until then, let's continue to study this strange phenomenon
