Contacting dealers via email from Autotrader

So I decided to contact dealers via email for some cars I've been interested in lately. Turns out the email system is basically for me to just dump off my contact info because they seem to not want to deal with me unless I call them.

Anytime I've asked a question about the car they refer me to the carfax which has all the info I would even need. Seems fishy to me... these are major manufacture dealers in the Ohio too...

is this the norm treatment I've been getting?

What kinda dealers?

They're generally bad enough about the phone...a good salesman only wants to talk to you long enough to get you in the door. Email...probably not gonna accomplish much.

I had the same experience when I was shopping for used Lexus ES330's. If you do not want to give your contact information, go to dealer's website and call using their number.

Email is basically used for "when can i get you in the dealership for a test drive"
you are EXTREMELY lucky if they actually talk ANY numbers.

those "GET INTERNET PRICE" buttons are just there to email you to ask you to come into the store

True, but you can just hold firm and get a price. I used to work in internet sales and while we were told to try not to give prices over the phone and get the customers in, and we DID try, we'd still end up giving them the price if they insisted.

If you are persistent, some will converse with you via email. When I was shopping, it took many attempts at many dealers to get one that would converse over email. The bulk of them would dump a generic reply with a "call us" or "give me your number so I can harass call you" response.

When I was shopping for a new car I went through edmunds and cars.com, the dealers were very happy to work through email. Once I got the best price I printed it out and took it to a dealer near me who beat the price.
