Contact lenses - tell me about them

I am required by law to wear eye glasses when I drive. So I got my eye test and bought my eye glasses. I only wear them when I watch tv from far away or when I drive, other than that, no. I can't see small words or signs from far away, that is why I wear them.

Tell me, how do contact lenses compare? Can you wear them while sleeping? I heard from my cousin that you cannot. I know I'm sounding like a complete ignoramus, but I have not followed the latest trends in contact lenses.

So what price are they? And do they do as good a job as glasses?

You're not supposed to wear them while you sleep. As far as I know, you're supposed to let your eyes "air out" from time to time. If you wear them constantly, you'll have bloodshot eyes.

They're expensive and they work.

I'm happy with part-time glasses (far away from TV/driving)
ONLY negatives is that its harder to scope out hott babes, but as a plus - you avoid the fine rolly details of the whales :Q

Personally - I wear mine in for 30+ days at a time - never had a problem, they never hurt, and my doctor says my eyes are fine.

"Today, overnight wear of contact lenses isn't completely taboo. So what changed?

* The introduction of disposability helped to address some of the health concerns about extended wear. Previously, extended wear lenses were removed weekly, but they were re-used week after week, for months. Although the lenses were cleaned with some type of lens care system, it was impossible to remove all the proteins, lipids, and other deposits that collected on the lens. These deposits formed a potential breeding ground for infection-causing organisms, and caused inflammation and discomfort.

Today, extended wear lenses are typically disposable. If you sleep in your lenses, not only do you remove them at least once a week, but you throw them out each week and start with a fresh pair. This avoids long-term deposit buildup and promotes eye health.

* A new generation of contact lenses ? silicone hydrogels ? provide much more oxygen to the eye than conventional soft lenses. Not only do these materials make overnight wear a safer option than before, they deliver so much oxygen to the cornea that some brands of silicone hydrogel lenses are approved for 30 days of continuous wear.

* Many wearers have adopted "flexible wear." This calls for using extended wear contact lenses, but typically removing them each night. However, when you want to sleep in them ? during a weekend camping trip, for example, or even for an afternoon nap ? you can safely do so."

They have ones which you can wear overnight, I dont know how well they work though. I've worn contacts for 10+ years, mine cost like $48 for 6 pairs of 1 month contacts. Wear them for a month(taking them out at night) and then change them. I hate glasses.

They're like $20 for 5 pairs I believe....some of them may not feel as good as others so you'll want to try a few brands before you stick with one.

Contact Lenses suck! I wish I could wear them. I tried over 7 different brands/types and they all irritated the hell out of my eyes or caused them to water up. I'm back to my old school retro specs!

That's usually the difference between who can wear them, and who can't. I don't have sensitive eyes - I can touch them, have no problem with my contacts when I wake up in the morning from sleeping in them, and find them easy to put in. In fact - it only took me a few seconds to put them in the first time I got contacts.

What types?
I have daily disposables (can't sleep in them, supposed to throw them away after one ays use, soft lenses), they might be an idea to try if you haven't already. They are probably least likely to irritate.

Yeah I wear my contacts without ever taking them out for an average of 6 weeks. Then i'll take them out and let my eyes "rest" for a night (mostly out of feeling like I have to, not because of any discomfort). There was a discussion on this a week or so ago that would probalby be very informative to you.

I hate glasses. I only use my glasses only after I take out my contacts before I got to bed.
I use daily disposables, but I use them for about a week. A box will last me over 6 months. When I open a new set of contacts, I still keep the old lenses to use at the beach when I go out surfing. That way if they wash out of my eyes, I won't feel like it's a big loss.
