Contact lens wearers, want some recommendations

I've worn glasses for years, but I've decided they're not really practical for my job anymore. So I'm going to book an appointment with my eye doctor and see about trying some contact lenses.

I went on to Clearly Contacts to see what's available, and there's a lot. Dailies, bi-weekly, monthly, from about six different brands with a lot of different sub categories.

Just curious what ATOT's contact wearers prefer so I have a place to start when I'm talking to the optometrist.

I wear syngery duette hd lenses. I have to wear RGP lenses because of cornea damage but I wore them when I was younger as well. I could get 20/15 vision with then and I always prefer the option I could see best with.

Air Optics are the only ones I can wear. They are very light and last for at least 30 days. They cost a bit more than the others but they are worth it.

Im probably not much helps since i dont follow what they say to do....

but i have bi-weeklies. However i wear them till they need replacing and not just toss them out after two weeks. ive gone probably 2-3 months on some sets. I just replace them as they need it...ie i tear them or i lose them. I only wear them at work for the most part so usually 10-12 hours a day.

I wear bi-weekly disposable contacts by Acuvue Oasys.

I normally use them for a month at a time, rather than just the two weeks. They easily stay fresh enough for one month, so it saves me money that way.

Been using that brand for many many years now.

It's been a while, but I wore Acuvue and I think they were monthly ones. Never had an issue, but also started with them so I never tried anything else.

Just don't wear them overnight and they'll last

I wear dailies. A little more expensive, but no hassle with cleaning or anything else. As far as brand goes, it may take a few different brands to find the one that best works for your eyes.

I wear these Bausch & Lombs, and have for a long time now.

I even wear them non stop and sleep in them and wear them longer than I should, though I'm not recommending that to anyone.

My first year I wore acuvue oasys bi-weeklies. I usually felt a lot of discomfort by the end of the two weeks and if I slept in them they pretty much had to be replaced. This time I switched the bioinfinity monthly contacts and I've been unbelievably happy with them. No discomfort at the end of a month, I can sleep in them and with a little solution in the morning I'm good to go.

I usually just take mine out for about 3-5 days once a month and then change to a new pair.

I wear semi-permeable contact lenses. I can keep them in as long as I want. Just need to clean it every 3-4 weeks (overnight).

I moved into that phase myself but been using monovision by wearing only one contact for distance and nothing in the other eye for reading.

Biggest issues:

1. Do you have an astigmatism? This shows up as "cylinder" on your prescription.

2. Do you want hard or soft contacts?

Toric contacts that correct astigmatism are more expensive (significantly proportional to non-torics).

Hard lenses I don't care for. My optometrist, old one, told me they would keep my prescription constant... Bullshit?

Regardless, I use Acuvue Oasys for astigmatism. They're about $45 a box of 6. I think they should be bi-weeklies but I've worn them for 2-3 months at a time. They definitely don't feel as good as fresh out of the box lenses -- they don't feel bad either.

I also prefer to stick to disposables. Shit happens. I've dropped lenses on the floor while taking them off or putting them on, it feels better to just trash them than scrub them down and hope I don't get an eye infection. My first pair of contacts were "permanent" soft lenses and I honestly can't tell the difference between those and my disposables. Hard/rigid lenses are just scary and I like to rub my eyes a lot.

Edit: Forgot, contact lens solution. You can occasionally find it on sale for ~$10 for two "standard" bottles, regular price is closer to $20. Each bottle lasts me a good 2-3 months, so a box lasts half a year? Cheaper, generic brands are available, but talk to your optometrist -- if you google, you'll find some interesting info on generic house brand solution and the "good stuff".

Yeah - what's your prescription? Do you take your glasses off for sitting at the computer or reading.

I've just hit the point where I can't read if I'm wearing my contacts, only for distance. So definitely consider if you are taking your glasses off at various times.

Might be better off getting a really nice pair of glasses.

I used Acuvue 2 for years. The eye doctor kept trying to get me to try more advanced lenses that are supposedly better for my eyes, etc, etc. Oasys, several others, etc. I disliked all of them though, they all made my eyes kind of itchy and feel cloudy and uncomfortable. So I just stick with Acuvue 2 - only ones that I feel comfortable in and don't bug the hell out of me.
