Contact/Calendar sharing over network programs?

I've tried Outlook with Net Folders. It does not seem to synchronize 100% of the time and that is just not good enough.

What other programs are there that allow contact management and calendar sharing over a network?

I'd love to use Outlook, but it just doesn't seem to work well enough the way I set it up.

What version of Outlook?

It just 'doesn`t' work? No error message? All other network activity goes through fine? What kind of network is this?

Symantec Act!, Lotus Notes, Lotus Organizer (not sure if they make this anymore), Goldmine, probably several others.

From what I have seen the only reliable way to share using Outlook is to use Microsoft Exchange Server, which is just too damn complex and expensive for a small business or home user. Back in the olden days you could use MS Schedule+ and set up your own local post office using Exchange, and you were all set.
