Actions aside (the deletion of emails not accessed in 30 days aside) this is hilarious.

This is Mike Jandreau, master and commander of all customer service at Lycos. When you don't check into your email for 30 days, Lycos deletes 2 years worth of your personal email.

He's the guy who, after you complain, tells you to go suck an electrical socket.

Your job is to ask, "how hard?"

At least that's what happened to Whitney. When she bemoaned the evaporation of 104 weeks of her personal correspondence, Mr. Jandreau at Lycos responded,

"I'm sorry, no one here has any intentions of helping you with anything.

I am the manager of all of Customer Service. There is no one higher than me that you will speak with.

You violated our policy, which is, despite what you say, completely clear.

No one is holding anything hostage. Your e-mails have been completely deleted, and no amount of money can now restore them. "

Policy it may be, but this is no reason to treat a customer, even if most people aren't even sure that your company exists anymore. Lycos owes Whitney an apology and the restoration of all her deleted email.

For the future, why can't email services let us port our email archives just like address books? That way customers like Whitney could dump Lycos for something that doesn't suck, like Gmail.

Hello,

As a retaliation for enforcing company policies, one of our users, has been slandering me across various message boards and blogs.

Now, I find that an unauthorized photograph of myself is posted on "consumerist.com", violating my personal privacy.

I have had 81 death threats since last night, and 6 individuals have shown up at our corporate offices, looking to speak with me. All 6 of those individuals were asked to leave the premsises. [sic]

My photograph is located on: http:// tinyurl. com/ 2ftcg6

I immediately request that this website and photograph be removed, as it is a violation of my privacy.
Under Federal Law, you must comply with this request."

Consumerist replies

Dear Mike,

We're sorry, no one here has any intentions of helping you with anything.

We are the manager of all of Customer Service. There is no one higher than us that you will speak with.

You violated our policy, which is, despite what you say, to not be a jerk to your customers.

Your image will be held hostage. After you apologize to Whitney and restore her emails, your image will be deleted.

P.S. The picture was gleaned from your site, MovieSnobs. You may want to cc your letter to Google Images as well.

Thats just golden.

Read the first line again, that action aside, the point is thats no way to treat anyone.

30 days isn't that long to keep email active, for hotmail it's 90 days I believe.

But if you're searching for a plausible explanation..

What if someone is travelling and doesn't have access to a computer for 30 days?

Do we know that the original email was real? It's hard to believe anyone in customer service could write something so offensive. Your job is to be as bland and inoffensive as possible, even in the face of douches.

the author has since written several times demanding they remove his picture. He has not disputed any of the facts or that he wrote the email.

Lycos mail is fvcking sh1t, they did her a favour. They would lose many emails I sent or received and the interface was abysmal. I ditched the account within 1 month.

That guy is pretty dumb. But so is the person who let their account go inactive, and so is the person who wrote the consumerist article.

Who are these people that can go down to corporate headquarters looking for him, and what are they planning to do if they do get in touch with him?

It happened to my account. My first internet email account was with Eudoramail. I picked it because at the time it was the top email program out there and I figured that the company wasn't going anywhere. Used the web email for years and finally lycos bought them out. I've since moved on to other webmail providers but I tried to keep my eudoramail (now lycos) account active because I had old correspondence that would be a pain to extract and in case any old friends wanted to reach me. However it can be tough to remember to log into a place every month just to keep it alive. And one time I must have let it lag...all gone. Definitely a crappy service.
