Consumer Gear Pricing Engines...how do they work?

Curious - does anyone have any information about the backend design of various online pricing engines? i.e. pricegrabber, anand's RTPE, tomshardware's, pricewatch. How is their data updated? Is it automatic or done manually? Is it an XML/RSS feed?
