Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act

ROFL! I have always wondered what got up the MPAA's (the Motion Picture Association of America) ass. What would I rather do, spend 3 bucks at blockbuster/HBO, or waste around 4~12 hours (if lucky) of DSL bandwidth. Any company feeling threatened by someone downloading a 1.2 GB file @~15kB/sec really needs to get an ego check! Maybe its the fact motion pictures are now less profitable then video games, yet seem to cost more...

I'd like to see them try to enforce this rule. There are terrorists, rapists and other murderers walking around free on our streets, and the government is worried about some computer geeks downloading MP3s.

<< There are terrorists, rapists and other murderers walking around free on our streets, and the government is worried about some computer geeks downloading MP3s. >>

Hollywood's bottom line is far more important at least in their minds. They don't care who gets steamrolled so long as they feel confident their crappy movies are fully under their control.

<< The CBDTPA does say the final "encoding rules" should take into account fair-use rights, such as making backup copies or reproducing short excerpts from books, songs or movies. Copies of TV broadcasts made for one-time personal use at home are also permitted. >>

Just should, huh? Fair use laws should be enacted before the MPAA/RIAA is allowed to castrated the technology industry. I think we (consumers) screwed up by not going for this along time ago.

I am outraged. And if you live in the US, you should be too.

The topic of this thread should really be "You are going to be royally screwed, WAKE UP and do something about it!" Unless you like prison food.

I can't believe people aren't more worked up over this! We are talking MAJOR changes in the way a lot of people here live their lives. Taking things for granted until someone takes them away is no way to live! Don't think that just because it sounds stupid or ridiculous to you that it has no chance of happening. The entertainment industry is relentless - they will not stop until their agenda is law. It may not come all in one fell swoop with the CBDTPA, but they will continue, a bit at a time, until their goals are acheived. They are counting on one thing - that consumers are too god damned lazy to do anything about it. They're too lazy to write to their legislators, too lazy to try and change anything. They'll just take whatever is handed to them.

RIGHT NOW YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Until April 8, 2002, the government is asking for citizen comment on this piece of legislation (and other technology-related items). Here's a link to the latest information, a "canned" letter if you are too lazy to write your own, and instructions on how to contact the people who need to hear from you.
