Constantly read/writing HD or just loud?

I have a Seagate X15 36LP. I just noticed every 5-10 seconds it writes/reads (or sounds like it).
I have no programs writing to disk and there is no pagefile on it.
Is it suppose to do that?

* Update*

I was thinking it was a Windows thing, I was about to install FreeBSD over it, when I noticed the same thing during the SCSI BIOS.

I did check, the drive writes at intermittant (close times) and since it seems to do so outside of an OS, is it defective or just typical?
