constantly loseing connection

i have dsl and for the past 6 months i have been behind a linksys router. recently i was trying to get better speed on overnet so i pluged my computer directly to the modem and stoped useing the router. now for the past 2 weeks i'm constantly loseing my connection like 10 times a day at least, and i have to go to ipconfig to release and renew my ip. after that it's fine for a little while then nothing. i thought it was due to overnet but i haven't turned that program on for like a week. any ideas what the problem could be this is getting annoying
