Hi, i always defrag my harddrive (WD800JB)

like once or twice everyday every partitions. I use PerfectDisk2000, i always keep it under 1% (2% the most)

will this damage the disk?

what i am thinking is it always keep running(defraging), the life of the drive will be shorten...

will it?

thanks

why the hell are you doing this? yes the drive life is definitely shortening keep in mind HDD's are still mechanical
parts of the PC.

Yes, it will shorten the life of it a bit. Driving your car to work will shorten its life too. There's not much to be concerned about.

But why would you do that? Once a week is plenty for defragging. Heck, the stupid Win 2K utility can't keeps itself stable on my comp so I never defrag.

😱 oh, i kept doing it since i got the drive. i better stop doing it...

oh btw, how will u defrag the drive?

do u do each drive seperately? or do it simultaneously? I do 4 partitions at once. take about a nite to do it.

There's no point to keeping your drive uber defragged constantly. I defrag maybe every 3 or 4 weeks and I'm perfectly fine.

your doing it at 1-2% and it takes all night ?! i have 3 drives in this comp 90+ gigs , do it once a week and it only takes about an hour.
sounds like somthing wierd going on.......
good luck

I used to do it just like you... hahaha... that's how anal i was...

But i only use XP... i boot into safe mode with comman prompt and defrag it from there... 😀 now i only do it once a month or so. 🙂

Why do you people defragment so much?!?!?!?!?!

If you'd clear your browser's cache and both of the Windows' temp directories most of your fragmentation would go away! You also need to remember fragmentation is not as big a problem as most think. When you have fragmented files the ONLY time performance will be affected is when you are reading or writing to the fragmented files! Other files are not affected. And by defragmenting so much you are keeping your free space almost entirely consolidated making it much easier for fragmentation to occur.

Use Win2k or XP's defrag utility and click the Analyze button.... If it says "You do not need to defragment this volume" then listen to it. Otherwise your just wasting your time and wearing your drive out. Most hardrives will end up doing the same amount of I/O and seek operations in a single defragmenting session as they would in a week or more of normal use!

Maybe its just me but my pc seems to do much better the less I defrag, I think its been six months since the last time. I just get rid of all the junk like stevewm said. basically dont do it till i start slowing down or have other odd problems
