constant ie errors since windows update

I did windows update and dld a just few patches, and ever since then, ie has been giving me the "Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message about every 30secs no matter what, but does not close any ie windows, only opens a new one. It sometimes also does this when I don't have any ie windows open.

does anybody have an idea? I'm getting ready to format because this is a really big problem
