Constant hard drive activity

Only in the past week or so have i noticed that the HDD activity light on both my IDE drives internal and my external usb2 drive are blinking constantly. I can't really hear the drives being accessed much, but the lights are definitely blinking.

Since this only started happening, i assume it's not a page file issue or anything. I guess it could be some type of spyware or something running?

Any ideas ? it's kind of annoying me. As short as a week ago my computer (with no programs running) would barely access the hard drives when it was just idling...now it's non-stop.

done everything except windows update and profit....i'm still hesitant to install SP2 for XP. hmm...maybe i should

ok. i did some more research. i ran "diskmon" and it appears that almost all the activity is between my main hard drive and my external usb2 hard drive. it keeps writing tiny packets of data for some reason.

any idea why this would be? my external hard drive is simply a backup. it sits there until i write to it
