constant disk usuge in xp

I am running a dual boot xp/vista setup with 3 ide and 1 sata drive
when in vista alls fine and the drive indicator light on the cae only comes on when the drive is in use. in xp it stays on from the time i get into xp till I shut down.

there is no blinking just a astead red light any ideas?
