Constant Activity on Internet Connection

Hi, I just did a new install of Windows XP, and right now when I have nothing running except Norton Antivirus, there is constant activity on the internet connection. It's mainly upload rather than download, about a 10:1 packet ratio. It goes about 100 packets a second I think.

Is there a way to find out what this is? Or is there something in windows that does this? I didn't notice before when I installed windows because I didn't have the connection icon.

If you have Cable Internet and you are connected directly to the Modem, it is Normal phenomenon.

If it is so, get a cable DSL Router to insolate you from the Internet.

I would install Sygate Personal Firewall so that you can watch traffic on your PC and see exactly what is causing the problem!

Sygate Personal Firewall

It will also block access to everything unless you specify that it can access the net which is a must these days!

Download and install a sniffer and capture some traffic if your curious. Pretty normal behavior probably though. Ethereal is a decent free sniffer.

or you've got a worm. make sure antivirus is up todate and use a personal firewall.
