Console War 2007: Updated sales figures

No, 1.5m figure isn't credible at all, that figure might be true for NA + Japan from December '06.

ArsTechnica links to a BBC story: 600,000 sold in Europe so far out of 1,000,000 shipped. BBC story

The 400,000 unsold also explains the stories of "piles unsold everywhere," i.e. Sony shipped more than enough to meet initial demand.

Why do people care so much about how many next gen consoles are being sold?

I'd say first because everyone likes a good race or a good war. And second because popularity will determine in some part support from game developpers and future consoles and direction of market.

I want blu-ray to finish crushing HD-DVD soon so the format wars will be over and studios can start cranking out more titles.

I don't care who wins the console wars as long as it isn't another Microsoft monopoly. Competition is good, MS dominance often means stagnation while they go off and look for something else to "embrace, extend, extinguish" or "cut off their oxygen."
