I've read that vista plans on having a "Live Anyware" feature that will allow the xbox people ot duke it out online with PC'ers.

I've played the xbox 360 in FPS's and all that comes to mind is a one sides slaughter. Vechile based games however i can see being more fair.

So for people who have experence with both, how do you see this turing out? Bigger online communities or a lot of swearing at people using PC's in matches?

It would be a slaughter of the consolers, but more importantly I don't think it can be done. How would a server be setup for both? The game coding is different. Also, games of the same title sometimes have differences that would make playing on the "same" map problematic.

I may be wrong, but I'd be interested in seeing the article you read.

what if like the next quake could be played across all platforms...that'd be awesome, not ever going to happen, but awesome nonetheless

It would work the same way a website works just fine in multiple browsers. As long as the console and pc versions of the game just stick to the same protocols there shouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure they'll make sure the maps are the same for the pc and console versions.

I believe they have this planned for Unreal Tournament 2007 for PS3 & PC.

I almost feel sorry for anyone playing on a console, as we PC players are going to rape them something bad :D

I look forward to console FPSers and PC FPSers playing together in the same server/game/map. It will finally silence these idiots I work with who claim the console is the superior FPS platform. :)

anyone tried to play "the specialists" half-life mod? the game is so ridiculously fast-paced.. no WAY a console controller could move quickly enough.

and i quote from PC gamer No. 156

"Live anywhere will offer the same single online identity to PC gamers, connecting them to each other as well as Xbox Live community-and eventually, even PDA's and movile phoes-in a orgy of cross-platform action."

Anyone remember the days when Quake III Arena on the Dreamcast allowed players to fight against players owning the PC version ?

I do, because I was part of the DC owners playing with, and mostly against PC'ers (although of course we had to ask to make sure). Let me tell you that a lot of PC gamers were quite surprised what a good DC player could do with "just a controller". I myself wasn't that good, but I saw some humiliating defeats out there for both sides, not just the "consolers".

Don't most console FPSs make up for the difficulty aiming with auto aim, aim-assist, or forgiving hit detection?

Yes sometimes, but if I am not mistaken it will usually be an option and not forced upon the player.

But of course pretty much any PC'ers getting fragged by a Console player would pretend the later was using "auto-aim" help, whatever the Console player would say to defend him/herself.

I hope they don't put a form of team speak on that will let everyone talk to each other in a game from both sides.....

I think it depends. After having played GoW for some time, I can see how that type of game, with all the cover, rolling and diving lends itself quite well to a controller. The actual aiming part though, yes, certainly lends itself to the accuracy and speed of a mouse.

Also, remember that it would take essentially nothing for MS to patch in KB+Mouse play into the Xbox360.

That's how it is in GoW, but only during the loading screens and round results. During the match it's team-only.

I'm surprised they haven't done this with World of Warcraft. I know a console controller isn't ideal for this type of game, but since it isn't really a twich game it shouldn't matter too much.

WoW on all three next gen consoles = a ton of money for blizzard.

I remember when I use to slaughther people in Quake 3 Arena on Dreamcast on the controller and they finally released a mouse and keyboard and I always got owned. People would say I was a good challenge who used the combo but they had a HUGE advantage.

The code is no problem as anything developed with XNA can be ported to the computer with ease.
