Consoles currently fill a niche by bringing gaming to your living room with good multiplayer, something PCs haven't been able to do. But soon everyone's TV will be 1920x1080, not the ~700x~500 they've been for so long. This will get a nice boost early next year when the switch is made. SFF PCs are coping better with their pitfalls (noise, heat) and getting smaller as PCs on the whole get cheaper. The more people buy them the cheaper economics of scale will allow them to be. Hopefully all of these factors will coalesce and snowball, crowding consoles out of their niche. It wouldn't hurt if developers started offering multiplayer for PC games... Unles the console makers actively fight this trend - something they may very well do - I see consoles dying out by 2020. It may prove more expensive to fight than it's worth for them though.
