I havent used a console game system since PS2, so my knowledge of the current systems is very weak, to say the least.

Can someone tell me what these systems would be equal to in the PC world - CPU, RAM, graphics card wise?

the ps3 uses a geforce ~7800gtx equivalent, and the xbox an ATI ~x1950
you can find this on wikipedia on or linked from the PS3 or XBOX 360 pages

they're OLD, the nvidia (g80) 8800 that came out about the same time as those consoles was significantly faster already

modern computers >> 5 year old hardware

^ all true, but the overhead is also much lower on a PS3 / 360 than on a PC.

Run task manager on your PC and look at the couple of pages of processes that are running, then go to computer management in Control Panel and see the few dozen services running in addition to that.

The operating system on a console is lean and mean by comparison, and is designed to favor running one application at at time instead of multi-tasking.

Despite that, after 5 years both consoles are much weaker than even a $500 PC.
