Console gamers get a reprieve

Back in August, it looked like Unreal Tournament 3 would allow the first (?) cross-platform play between the PlayStation 3 and PCs.

Not going to happen. Sorry. According to Epic's Mark Rein in an IRC chat, "The biggest challenge in doing cross platform play is synchronizing [sic] the builds such that the build on the PC is 100% compatible with the build on the PS3."

Rein did leave open the possibility that cross-platform could happen with a later patch to the game, but said, "the likelihood is small."

We're totally crying on the inside.

sounds reasonable, since PC will likely have a bajillion patches since PC hardware configurations are all different. it would have been nice but really the big deal about UT on ps3 is the keyboard/mouse and mod support.

Shadowrun already was the first...and it didn't work out well. You could argue that it was the way they implemented it or the quality of the game though.

Technically Quake 3 was the first back on the Dreamcast, although if I remember correctly, it didn't work well either.

I'm not suprised about this news. I still don't see how it's fair for some players to be using a kb+m and others using a controller when both are on the PS3. If one is more accurate, that's going to ruin the fun of people using the alternative control method.

ideally we'd be able to filter servers or players using one or the other. that shouldnt be too hard to do. also itll be nice to finally once and for all settle that little arguement 🙂

I don't know, I doubt the game will list who is using what type of control. What if I had both a controller and a keyboard/mouse plugged in and could use them both? I could trick the system!

Following randay's logic, it shouldn't be too hard to lock out one method of control if the game specifies it can't be used. I don't doubt that someone will find a way to trick the ps3 into thinking their kb+m are gamepads, though.

I don't think their's much of an argument about whether a mouse is more accurate. Maybe an unaided mouse against a gamepad + autoaim, would be interesting.

doubtful unless the autoaim is ridiculous and there are weapons that can exploit it (headshots with sniper rifles all over the place), because there are always scenarios where you don't want to aim directly at your target, such as shooting at the ground near a target's feet with splash damaging weapons...
