Considering that they are saying that the next version of OSX is fully 64bit, will it not be able to run on the latest Apple laptops? Because the current Core Solo/Duo processors don't have x64 built into them. Only Core 2 processors do and Apple isn't using them yet.
So will current system owners not be able to upgrade to Leopard?

Also does anyone know if Core 2's can be dropped onto the mobo of an Apple Macbook possibly or has anyone tried?

The PPC Architecture is already 64-bit ready. Intel Core Duo is not. Leopard will be able to run both 32-bit and 64-bit and will be able to run the seperately or at the same time.

64-bit will be useful only when new OS-es don't offer 32-bit version. Until then, 64-bit apps are just a half-assed port.

People buought AMD x64 arch. years ago, and still there's no even Office, Photoshop, Visual Studio, or Firefox with released 64 bit version. There's alpha of Firefox, hardly worth counting.

Hardly, there's full-assed 64-bit ports of just about everything that runs on Linux. Notable exceptions are Oo_O and things that we don't have the source for like flash. I don't have an AMD64 system myself yet, but AFAIK FF works just fine on them as long as you don't want to use 32-bit only crap like flash.

Sorry, but Flash is an important thing on the web now.

Recompiling code with first gen 64-bit compiler is what I mean with half-assed port.

How many people know to write code that runs better and takes advatage of 64-bit system?

Not for me. But if you really care then complain to Adobe/Macromedia, they're the ones dragging their feet.

How many people write assembly? Very few and that's how it should be, it's the compilers job to produce good assembly from higher level languages. Most Linux apps just need recompiled with the AMD64 target since they've already been fixed on other 64-bit Linux systems. Sure there are usually minor things that need to be fixed to get proper operation on a new architecture, but performance-wise there's practically no need for code changes.

What was all that info on the net before about problems running 32-bit and 64-bit apps side-by-side on Intel? Was that just misinformation?
