Considering replacing my Ti4200 with ATI 9200SE, any opinions?

I am having compatibility trouble with a couple of games with the nVidia card and can get the ATI 9200SE for $69.99.
Are those cards fairly similar performancewise?

I was afraid of that.

What ATI card would you say is comparable to Ti4200?

The 8500 is a little slower, the 9600 pro is a little faster

Alright, well there's also the 9000, 9200 and 9500.

Having been somewhat of an nvidia fanboy until recently I haven't followed the evolution and relative performance of the ATI series...

An 8500 is close, but somewhat slower. I think that it would be your best bet. 9600 Pro is faster but also pricy. I'd say the GeforceFX 5600 Ultra is probably the closest performer.

I upgraded a Visiontek Ti4600 to a 9800 Pro, but I dropped $300 in the process... the 9800 is MUCH faster then the GeForce.... BUT ... I only dropped the bucks because "Halo" looked like crap @ 800x600x32 (the highest res I could get decent framerates at)... now I can play at 1280x1024x32 at what feels like much higher performance & image quality.

The reason I threw in the "but" there is this... are you playing any DX9 games now, because if not I would just stay put for about a month
because unless your a 3d-mark freak or are playing one of the few DX9 games out there, you will save yourself about $100 by waiting & aside from "Halo" & 3D Mark 2001se, (3D 2003 is too DX9 reliant to use as a comparison) you will be underwelmed by the performance increase the
9800 pro will bring you, never mind one of the lower model cards.... sure Quake 3 picks up about 50fps @ 1600x1200x32, but who really cares?

BTW... don't even consider an FX 5600, in DX8 benchmarks it may well be slower then your Ti4200, at least in the benchmarks I've seen...the
jury is still out on the FX 5700 which is slated to be priced around $200 at release & by the time its IS released the 9800 Pro should be around
the same price.... either way you win by waiting & if it wasn't for "Halo" thats exactly what I would have done.

Here is part of a thread I posted overin the software forum:

My Ti4200 works fine with Halo. I have no complaints about the look or feel of the game.

Problem is, Halo won't startup at all unless I uninstall the nVidia refresh rate fix that I have been using for years to play counter strike with an fps above 60.

The Ti4200 is much much faster than the 9200 SE, if you replace your Ti4200 with it you will reget it for sure. :(

Apart from 8x agp support the 9200 is identical to a 9000, the 9500 is okay but like the others you mentioned it's SLOWER than a GF4 Ti4200.

That's your problem? No sweat-

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\halo.exe" -vidmode 1024,768,130

What you need to do is find out what refresh rate you have set up using your refresh rate utility. The above is a copy of my shortcut set to run Halo @1024x768 with a 130Hz refresh rate. Pick your res, find out what refresh rate you have and modify the above and you are all set. Don't do any drastic downgrading or anything over that one, he!l GearBox may fix that at some point. Are there any other games you are having problems with?

I would recommend the 9600 Pro to replace your Ti 4200. That will be my next card to replace my aging 7500 AIW.

I wasn't originally planning to replace the Ti4200 until this problem cropped up as all other games are working fine for my son.
I just shelled out $350 for my 9800Pro and figured there was plenty of life left in the Ti4200 as my son is happy to play his games at 800 x 600 anyway.

I will try that addition to the command line shortcut, hopefully that will do it.

Although there are a lot of 9200 bashers here, get a reg 9200 over the SE. Mine runs all games maxed out no problem. If it was DX9 it would be amazing. Right now running Max Payne 2 1280x1024x32 at around 60 fps. Very nice card for the pricepoint althought it would be very close, almost identical to your 4200 since they are both 8x and DX8 cards.

If it was dx9 it would be bashed as badly as the fx5200. The fx5200 gets bashed way more than a 9200, and it's funny cause they perform relatively similar.

Your kidding about the R9200 right? Take a look at this review of the R9200 v GF4 Ti4200 v FX5200 v GF4 MX440:-

Thanks to all the people here for their input.

Thanks to BenSkywalker I was able to solve the incompatibility issue with an edit to the shortcut command line.

I'll be able to keep that Ti4200 for a while longer now, otherwise I was going to get the ATI 9600 for $109 at newegg.

When playing Halo hold Ctrl and hit F12 to show the in-game framerate, so you can prove to yourself that indeed is running faster, instead of just going by "feel" ;).
