Considering pergo for kitchen.. any suggestions/tips ?? ;)

Can i just cheese out and put the pergo ontop of the cruddy vinyl i have right now? does it lose its luster after a while if i mop with detergents or stuff? i'm not all that handy, so my questions might be dumb how hard is it to remove vinyl anyways?

any help would be greatly appreciated

I would have someone professionally put it down. If you don't do it right the warrantee will probably be voided. It's not cheap from what I hear.

ah yea, i'm probably going to have it installed professionally. its just that they charge more if they have to remove the old vinyl wondering if i could do that part myself. also wondering how well pergo lasts

They should be able to put it directly over the vinyl floor, unless the build-up of materials ( vinyl, new floor etc) causes some excessive height differences in the flooring between rooms.

Pergo is basically a thick formica, and will withstand most any abuse you can throw at it, it doesnt look or feel as nice as a real wood floor, it is most certainly more durable, especially in any area where moisture could be a problem.

Vinyl is a bitch to remove.

We put down armstrong's (i think it was) pergo like stuff for my grandmother, it really wasn't that difficult to install. Personally I like the tile floor in my kitchen alot more though, I'd get that instead

We had some Pergo at our old house, I liked it. The only drawback was it was poorly installed (though it was a "professional" doing it), and they chipped it a little so it didn't look as good as it could. But it washed up nice, quick mopping = good as new, it was under 2 yrs old though so maybe that nice quality doesn't last?

pergo seems pretty easy to install..my friend did his whole house in it and it was his first time and it came out beautifully... i think to remove vinyl you have to heat it up and scrape it off...

I've done 3 houses in Pergo, and a couple smaller jobs and touch ups as well. It's great stuff, VERY easy to install (just watch the video, take the class, and take it slow). I personally always take up the old floor, but only because levelling is much better on bare floor than on any other surface. If you choose to leave it down make sure you use a high quality moisture barrier. Don't use any detergents, there's no need. Almost everything comes up with just plain water and a quick rub/mop. If anything tougher gets on it, there's some Pergo formulated remover that works great without damaging the Pergo or the glue.

As for the vinyl, it depends how old it is, what it was put down with, and what's underneath. Go to a local Home Depot, they're the fountain of all building knowledge...just take what they say with a grain of salt if there advice involves purchasing any 'special tool' from them.
