Considering buying Velociraptor 300gb

I've never really jumped on the high performance hdd bandwagon. I currently use an old 300 gb 7200rpm drive as primary, and am buying a new rig this week so my options are either buying a 1tb F1 7200rpm as primary or the 300gb velociraptor primary and the 1tb F1 as secondary. The price difference is about $300 CDN.

I see the benchmarks show the raptor as being really fast, except when compared to the intel ssd's which cost more than my gtx280 I'm gonna order. What I'm wondering is, for those of you who took the plunge, was it worth it? Are the real world performance gains pretty good? Like, $300 good? I imagine the F1 itself will be a speed boost for me given that I'm using a 300gb drive from a few years back.

Oh also, the 1tb Black drive is similar priced to the F1 and I've heard good things on each, anyone know which one is superior? Are they equal? They might be priced differently once NCIX's new specials roll in, which is when I'm buying.

I'm a gamer.

Best buy has it for $237 this week and I was going to pick up one for myself. Everyone else that has/uses it loves it. Best of all it's quiet and fast!

I've been a fan of Raptors for a long time now, & i still am.

I always say that they aren't going to be a great bang for buck option, no.

But every time i am using a PC a lot (like my LAN gaming PC) without a Raptor as the main OS drive, i miss it.

I personally really like the improvement in snappiness you get from them, so if money wasn't an issue for everyone, i'd recommend everyone have one as their OS drive.

And i haven't even used the much faster VelociRaptor...i'm just comparing from my 150 GB & previous 74 GB ones.

Until good MLC or the SLD SSDs come down in price, the VR is the best OS drive within a reasonable $$$ range IMO.

Same here. I been wondering by how much faster or snappy it would feel going from a 150 GB raptor to a 300 GB VelociRaptor. I don't really need the extra space it would just be cool to have even quicker snappiness!

I don't think it would make a huge difference but maybe I am wrong? My 150 GB Raptor is fine for now with 30 GB for my OS and Applications and a little over 100 GB for Games. Suits me well. Now a 74 GB Raptor would be a little difficult to work with. I try to keep half of all my partitions at least half empty. At least for my OS and games so it doesn't effect the speed to much. The more full your hard drive is or the closer to the games are installed to the end of the hard drive the slower it gets.

I dunno. Theres many reviews out there comparing them. It seems to be fairly quicker according to all the reviews I read.

I am the same way. I dont care about the storage, the access times are what matter. 😛 I want one badly, I just dont wanna pay top dollar for it.

Im still faily happy with my 74GB raptor for main drive so....However, I am almost out of space. : /

My opinion is to get the F1 and just use that drive for a few months until SSD drives are a little better priced. The Intel x25-M has come down $100 in the last few weeks alone. And there are new MLC SSDs coming out in the next month or two that supposedly have a better controller than the previous generation to eliminate the stutter issues. OCZ for example, has one available for pre-order with ETA of January.

I think that with some competition, prices should be quite a bit better in the very near future.

With that said, I have about 5 Raptors and they are great. But, I'm ready to move on to something better than the Raptor.

I'm also mainly a gamer.

As these SSD drives get full, they don't slow down in speed do they? I wouldn't think so but im just curious, thanks

No but your wallet gets hit because you have to buy more drives.

I ordered a 300gb velociraptor, will give her a whirl. Will use an F1 1tb for storage.

Cool you will love the speed difference of a raptor from a normal 7200 rpm hard drive! The response time alone will knock your socks off!

i heard there was a New Egg canada opening up, can someone else confirm this?
Yep it exists. link

It doesn't have the same selection as the US counterpart though, and the deals don't seem quite as good.

FYI they are fast no doubt but they are also loud. You can definitely hear them working. I had one for about a week then decided to return it because of the noise.

Yeah ive read its the icepack that makes them loud. Its not the "drive." I dunno, if I bought one, id prollly deal with it. Their speed has to be worth it. 😛

Yes from what I've read it is the icepack. And to me, they were fast but not much faster than a fast standard high end 7200 rpm drive. For me, silence is what I strive for in my computer. When I turn it on, you can't even hear it its dead silent. And with the raptor in it, you could definitely hear my system where before you couldn't. So if noise is not something that bothers you, then yeah get a raptor they are hands down the fastest hard drives around..
